It fires from an open bolt, but uses a slide like a pistol rather than a bolt in an enclosed receiver like a typical SMG. The PM-63 RAK (often incorrectly referred to as Ręczny Automat Komandosów —"commandos' hand-held automatic"; the name itself means cancer or crayfish in Polish) is a Polish 9×18mm submachine gun, designed by Piotr Wilniewczyc in cooperation with Tadeusz Bednarski, Grzegorz Czubak and Marian Wakalski. Pioneer Arms Corp The history…. Development of the PM63 RAK dates back to the late 1950s when the concept was first proposed at the Warsaw University of Technology in response to a requirement for a light hand-held defensive weapon for rear-echelon soldiers such as gun crews and vehicle drivers.

The PM-63 fires the 9x18mm Makarov round from double stack 15 or 25 round magazines. Fire modes are semi-automatic and automatic at a rate of fire of 650 rpm. The maximum effective range is quoted as 150 meters. With automatic fire this range is much reduced.

The 9x18mm PM-63 RAK is perhaps most accurately described as a type of early Personal Defense Weapon (PDW). With its folding vertical grip and collapsing stock the PM-63 is not much larger, or heavier, than a machine pistol. Capable of being carried in a hip holster, the PM-63 could be worn like a conventional large service pistol.
